HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR HAWAII MARRIAGE LICENSE AND REGISTRATION: A 2~STEP PROCESS

APPLY online for your license:

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A HAWAI’I MARRIAGE LICENSE AGENT so they can officially register your intended wedding.

Have your licensed marriage celebrant officiate your CEREMONY and verify it online for you.

Hawai’i is a beautiful place of aloha to celebrate your love and commitment! Whether you are a visitor to the Islands, drawn to the year-round warm and sunny weather, or a local seeking a meaningful spiritual ceremony on the beach, my task is to make your ceremony easy, deep, and special, and then verify it with the State of Hawai’i. Some create a Ceremony of Love while others create legal marriages. Calley celebrates both.

Please be aware ~

Once you apply online for your marriage license, YOUR LICENSE MUST BE REGISTERED BY AN AGENT IN PERSON. THE AGENT WILL ISSUE A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WHICH YOUR OFFICIANT WILL VERIFY AFTER THE CEREMONY.

To lawfully marry in the State of Hawai’i, you must go online and apply for your license. Once the license has been issued, there is no waiting period before you can see the marriage agent and the wedding can take place.

Secondly, you must make an appointment and both go in person to an authorized agent (Section 572-1.7, Hawaii Revised Statutes to have your license registered with the State. Please bring your photo ID’s with you.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A marriage license and marriage certificate are different documents.

The marriage license permits a marriage to take place.

•

The licensed agent registers the license after you meet in person.

•

The marriage certificate indicates that a legal marriage has been performed after the officiant verifies it.

The marriage certificate is prepared and filed by your licensed marriage officiant or performer with the Department of Health. A newly married couple receives one (1) certified copy of the marriage certificate at no extra charge, upon payment of the marriage license fee, which will be sent to the couple by mail (60-120 days) after the marriage has been performed. If a marriage certificate is needed sooner than this, you can apply for one or more additional certified copies.

NEW! Declared Middle and Last Names in Marriage & Civil Union

Effective April 17, 2019, Hawaii law is changed to allow parties to a marriage or civil union to choose any middle or last name to use upon the marriage or civil union.

Chapter 574-1 Married persons; civil union partners. Upon marriage or civil union, each of the parties to a marriage or partners in a civil union shall declare the middle and last names each will use as a married person or civil union partner. No person shall be required to change that person’s middle or last name upon entering into a marriage or civil union. Parties to a marriage and partners in a civil union shall not be required to have the same middle or last name. Every person may adopt any middle or last name upon entering into a marriage or civil union.
